COLOR + DESIGN in Port Townsend, WA - The coolest small town in America

Port Townsend is one of only three Victorian Seaports in the United States. As such, it is one of the few cities to have two National Historic Landmark Districts. Originally planned to be the “New York of the West,” the city went through a building frenzy in the late 1880s and early 1890s. With its maritime heritage, artist spirit, and a touch of urban chic, Port Townsend is an easily accessible base camp to the Olympic Peninsula and beyond.  This little, vibrant town hosts a variety of arts-based workshops and intensives with participants coming from around the world.
When I was invited by the Port Townsend School of the Arts to teach my Color + Design workshop, I saw this as an amazing opportunity to explore the northern regions of our West Coast. Lush, majestic nature, an abundance of history and a complete change of scenery were enough to stir my curiosity.
I hope you can join us.
What you will learn
This is a three day intensive workshop in which together we will try to open many doors, push through some walls and set up a course for each participant to further explore. The goal is to give you many tools, ideas and directions that you can build upon in your own studio practice.
This course is designed to benefit artists who work figuratively and abstractly. Some drawing/painting experience is preferable.

We will cover the following topics:
  • Line / varieties of line, line and shape, line and direction, density, value, etc.
  • Shape / varieties of shape, shape and value, shape and color, etc.
  • Exploration of Color  / perception of color & the role of hue, value, & saturation
  • Understanding Abstraction  / freedom of representational qualities
  • Design + Composition / balance, emphasis, simplicity, hierarchy, unity

This workshop will enhance one’s studio practice and life in general.  It will speak to you. Each day you decide what are the most meaningful takeaways for your practice. Mark created a lovely balance for both learning and allowing individual expression.

Mark is a great lover and keeper of knowledge, a perpetual student who not only wants to demystify the knowledge for his students, he wants them to have the keys to the kingdom. His great reverence and respect for what art is and what it can be are obvious and contagious.

I will keep these days (in the workshop) as a torch to be light when in a tunnel.
