EXPRESSIVE MARK MAKING in Mendocino CA - The Art of Figure Drawing
The Mendocino Art Center is a very special place overlooking the ocean from the top of the headlands. I am honored to conduct my workshop this year, as MAC celebrates its 60th anniversary as a haven for professional artists and students at all levels of experience. Many of you know that I lived in Mendocino for several years back in the late 70s/early 80s. Being part of the vibrant community of artists in this small village with a big soul, was a time I cherish dearly. This is why going back and teaching at their Art Center is not just an honor but also a great joy and food for my soul - an opportunity to see old friends and make new ones.

EXPRESSIVE MARK MAKING is an exciting course for artists who enjoy drawing the figure and are ready to explore daring approaches in mark-making. I have developed numerous exercises to help you stretch, take risks and surprise yourself in discovering the power of intuition in drawing the figure.
This three day workshop will focus primarily on shorter poses in order to allow you to experiment with various tools, techniques and strategies, generating many drawings in the process. The emphasis will be on pushing personal boundaries and discovering the potential for a more expressive, unique voice. The seven visual elements are line, shape, value, color, mass, space, and texture. Of these, line, value, and color are of special importance because they are the ones which, used singularly or in any combination, produce the other elements.
This workshop is not so much about the final product as it is about observing and seeing in a new, fresh way and learning to connect the eye and brain to the hand, and ultimately to one's heart. These three days become about freeing ourselves from our own judgement and cultivating trust in our ability to successfully express our creative voice.
Some drawing experience is required.
